Tom Pesciotta: News

WOW! - November 14, 2008

Has it really been that long since I updated this? I guess we get so involved in day to day life that some things get put on the back burner and then forgotten.
I took several months off from writing to play some gigs, then the summer hit and I was busy with summertime fun. Anyway, I've been back to my writing desk and things are progressing again. The first movement of my symphony is finished. I'm well into the third movement and I've got some ideas sketched out for the finale. You really learn to appreciate the great composers of the classical era when you start writing a symphony of your own.

New Work Premiered - October 31, 2007

Today my composition Automaton was premiered at the Eastman Theater in Rochester, NY. It was performed by the Eastman New Jazz Ensemble under the direction of Dave Rivello and was very well received by all who attended.

Work on my symphony continues. I'm well into the trombone solo now and am excited about bringing the 1st movement to it's conclusion.

Well, the symphony is progressing once again. After taking a break from writing this summer for family vacation, doing a month of gigs in Rochester, and painting my daughter's bedroom, I finally found time to get back to my composing. (Yes, even jazz musicians have to paint bedrooms.) The first movement exposition is done and I'm now working on the development section which will include a trombone solo. After that, the recapitulation should go pretty quickly and I'll be ready to start the third movement. The ideas are already flowing. Stay tuned

Jazz Symphony in the Works! - September 5, 2007

For some time now I've been working on composing a jazz symphony scored for large jazz ensemble (Big Band). I'm striving to combine tradtional compositional techniques with modern jazz stylings. Not an easy task but it is proceding well.
The second movement is already complete. The first movement is half-way there and should be finished by the end of the year. I've already sketched out ideas for the 3rd and 4th movements. I'll keep you posted as to its progress.
